Problem 3.2 - Helping the cook
Big Idea :Many important practical and mathematical applications involve comparing quantities of one kind or another; it is important to know which method to use and how we should use them.
A. How many cans of tomatoes would you advise the cook to buy to make spaghetti for the 240 campers? Explain your answer.
The cook would need 40 cans for 240 campers because the cook can make sauce for 6 campers from each can of tomatoes. Also it is 240 divided by 6 is 40.
B. How much would these cans of tomatoes cost altogether?
All the can in total would cost $32. How to calculate = 40 cans divided by 5 is 8, 8 multiply 8 by $4 is $32.
3.2 Follow up
1. At the EatMore grocery store, you can buy seven cans of tomatoes for $6. The cans are the same size as the cans at CannedStuff. Are the tomatoes at EatMore a better buy than the tomatoes at CannedStuff? Explain your answer.
The cans from EatMore is a better place to buy when you are going to buy as many as as many cans as possible for the least amount of money.
2. Gus was trying to figure out how to think about the EatMore price of seven cans of tomatoes for $6. He divided 7 by 6 and got 1.1666667. He then divided 6 by 7 and got 0.8571486. What does each of these numbers mean in the context of seven cans of tomatoes for $6?
If you divide 7 by 6 you would get how much each can costs, but if you divide 6 by 7, you would get how many cans for 1 dollar.
